TOEFL Practice Score vs Official Score

A TOEFL practice score on this site is an indicative 1.0–6.0 figure. Official section scores are ETS’s 1–6 results. The two are not a concordance table.

Practice feedback aligned to public TOEFL Writing 0–5 descriptors · how we grade · Not an official ETS score

A TOEFL practice score and an official score can both be printed as a number from 1 to 6 and still not be the same result. Official section scores are produced by ETS on the test you sit. As of January 2026, those reports use a 1–6 scale in half-point steps, four section scores, and an overall score that is the average of the sections rounded to the nearest half point. For a transition period, ETS also shows a comparable total on the older 0–120 scale. A practice figure on this site is an indicative 1.0–6.0 number we map from your attempt so you can choose the next drill. It is not that official score, and we do not publish a table that converts one into the other.

What the official number is

ETS scores the test. Institutions set their own requirements. There is no universal passing score from the TOEFL program. If a university still lists a 0–120 total, ETS has said the report in the transition period includes a comparable total so you are not doing that conversion yourself. Confirm the requirement with the institution. This page will not invent one.

ETS has also explained that practice or mock feedback and official scoring are built for different jobs. A fast practice system is there to show you a weakness quickly. The official system is there to produce a score institutions recognize, with the checks ETS describes for that sitting. Small differences between a mock and a test day are normal in their account, and even that comparison is about their materials, not about a third-party practice band.

So when someone asks whether a practice score “counts,” the answer is no. It counts as information for the next hour of study. It does not count on an application.

What the practice number is made of

On this site the indicative figure is built differently for receptive and productive sections. Treating them as one kind of 4.5 is the mistake this page exists to stop.

Reading and Listening items are right or wrong. A blank, a reply, or a question scores 1 or 0. The report shows the key, your choice, and a short rationale. The count of correct items is then mapped to an indicative 1.0–6.0 figure. There is no 0–5 rubric on those items, and there is no partial credit. How Reading is scored and how Listening is scored say this with the task lists attached. The map is ours. It is not an ETS raw-to-scale table, and we are not publishing one.

Writing and Speaking constructed tasks use 0–5 criteria. An email can be fine on tone and weak on a required point. A repeat can be intelligible and still drop a word the sentence needed. Those bars are the practice score that matters. The indicative 1.0–6.0 section figure is a summary for orientation. How Writing is scored and how Speaking is scored name the criteria. Build a Sentence is exact order, 1 or 0, which is closer to a Reading item than to an essay rubric.

The Writing calculator on the methodology page averages Writing task inputs only. It does not accept a Reading count. Do not type a Reading 4.5 into it and read the result as a total.

Why the same 4.5 can mean two repairs

A Reading 4.5 that came from spelling misses on Complete the Words asks for another Complete the Words set. A Speaking 4.5 that came from dropped content words on Listen and Repeat asks for a repeat drill. Averaging those two numbers into “about a 4.5 student” hides both repairs. Official scoring has to produce section scores that can be averaged, because that is the report. Your Tuesday practice does not have to average them before you know the miss.

Section What is scored What the 1.0–6.0 figure is
Reading Right or wrong items A practice map of the count
Listening Right or wrong items A practice map of the count
Writing 0–5 criteria, plus exact Build a Sentence items An orientation on top of those scores
Speaking 0–5 criteria An orientation on top of those scores

The format guide, TOEFL 2026 exam format, is where the tasks and the clocks live. This page is only the score distinction. If the number moved and you cannot say whether the items or the criteria moved, you do not have a result yet. You have a digit.

What to do with a gap

If your practice figure and a later official score differ, do not hunt for a secret conversion. Check three cheaper explanations.

First, the practice figure was never an official score, so a gap is allowed. Second, the attempt was not the same work: a looped listening clip, an untimed email, or a Reading set you retook after seeing the key. Third, you practiced a different miss than the one the official section punished. More official-style practice belongs to ETS materials. More repair of a named miss belongs here: Reading practice, Listening practice, Speaking practice, or the writing checker.

Which of those to open first is a separate decision, covered in which section to practice first. A low practice figure is not by itself a reason to buy a full section of every skill.

What you may quote, and what you may not

You may quote a practice figure to yourself as a reason to choose a task. You may not quote it to a university, an agent, or a friend as “my TOEFL.” The friend will hear an official claim you did not earn. The institution will not have a score report to match. If you need a number that travels, sit the test or use the score the test maker gives you on their own materials, and still read their explanation of what that practice score is.

Inside your own notes, store the evidence under the number. For Reading and Listening, store the fraction and the label. For Writing and Speaking, store the lowest criterion. A note that says only “Reading 4.5, Speaking 4.0” cannot tell you Monday’s work. A note that says “Reading 7 of 10, letters; Speaking Repeat Accuracy 3” can. The second note is the practice score. The first note is a souvenir.

When the official score arrives later, compare labels, not just half-points. If official Reading was the weak section and your practice misses were letters, the practice was at least aimed at the right skill. If official Reading was weak and you never practiced Reading because a Speaking 4.0 felt more urgent, the practice number did its small job and you ignored it. That is not a failure of the scale. It is a failure to use the only thing the scale was built to do: point at a task.

Do not average the four practice figures into a personal total and then compare that total with an official overall. The official overall is an average ETS defines. Our figures are not on that scale, even when the digits look familiar. Keep them in four rows. Act on the row whose evidence you can still explain a day later.

Try this yourself

Take the last practice number you remember. Write two lines under it: how many items were right, or which 0–5 criterion was lowest. If you cannot write either line, the number is not usable yet. Open the report and copy the line. Then start one task on the skill that line names. Do not average it with another section before that task exists. Open that task from Reading practice, Listening practice, Speaking practice, or the writing checker.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a practice 4.5 into an official 4.5?

No. We do not offer that conversion. Official 1–6 scores come from ETS. The practice figure is an orientation for the next drill.

Why does Reading not use the same 0–5 bars as Writing?

Reading items are right or wrong. Writing constructed tasks are scored on criteria. The shared 1.0–6.0 label is only a practice summary. It does not mean the underlying evidence is the same.

Did the official scale change in 2026?

ETS moved score reports to a 1–6 scale in half-point steps, with four section scores and an overall average. During a transition period the report also includes a comparable 0–120 total. Institution cutoffs can still be written either way. Ask the institution which number they require.
