The TOEFL 2026 exam format is four sections in a fixed order: Reading, Listening, Writing, then Speaking. Public ETS materials put the test under two hours. Reading and Listening are multistage adaptive. Writing and Speaking are not described that way. Official section scores use a 1–6 scale in half-point steps. Practice on this site can show an indicative 1.0–6.0 figure. That figure is not an official score, and the way it is built depends on the section.

Order and public timing
You do not choose the order. Reading comes first, then Listening, then Writing, then Speaking. The public overview’s approximate base times are about 30 minutes for Reading, about 29 minutes for Listening, 23 minutes for Writing, and 8 minutes for Speaking. Those times do not include every instruction screen. They are the planning numbers, not a promise that your administration will match the minute.
The older test’s long passages, integrated essay, and independent speaking tasks are not the 2026 structure. If a study book still times a 700-word passage or a 20-minute integrated essay, it is describing the previous exam. Writing in 2026 and Speaking in 2026 each cover one section. This page is the map that connects them to Reading and Listening.
| Section | Public shape | Adaptive? | Practice cost here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | About 30 min, about 50 items | Yes, two modules | 1 credit a task, 3 a section |
| Listening | About 29 min, about 47 items | Yes, two modules | 1 credit a task, 3 a section |
| Writing | 23 min, 12 items | No | 1 credit a pasted task, 3 a section |
| Speaking | 8 min, 11 items | No | 1 credit a task, 3 a section |
A new account has 2 credits. That is enough to see two solo tasks, or one solo task twice. It is not enough for a 3-credit section. The free credits are shared. Spending both on Speaking means Reading waits until you have more credits.

Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing each have a practice hub. One free task is enough to see the report.
Open Reading practiceReading and Listening
Reading uses three tasks: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage. Complete the Words is a short academic paragraph with missing letters and no word bank. Daily-life texts are emails, notices, menus, schedules, and similar practical pages. The academic task is a short passage, not a stack of long textbook readings. The Reading section guide has the module detail. Items are right or wrong.
Listening uses four tasks: Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, and Listen to an Academic Talk. You hear the prompt. Choose a Response then shows four written replies. The other tasks ask questions about what was said. The Listening section guide separates the public 29-minute section from this product’s shorter practice-module clocks.
Both sections route Module 2 from Module 1. You do not pick the easier or harder set, and you do not go back. Routing is not bonus points. It is how the second half of the section is chosen. Practice reports on this site keep the modules separate so you can see which task type missed, instead of staring at one band.
Start Reading at TOEFL Reading practice, which opens Complete the Words. Start Listening at TOEFL Listening practice, which opens Choose a Response. Each of those first tasks is 1 credit.
Writing
Writing is about 23 minutes and 12 items: 10 Build a Sentence questions, one Write an Email, and one Academic Discussion. Build a Sentence is exact chunk order, 1 or 0 per item, with no partial credit. Email and Discussion are constructed responses on a 0–5 scale. The public email task is the short campus message. The discussion is the post in which you add a view to a professor’s question.
You can paste an email or a discussion into the checker and spend 1 credit when you submit. You do not paste Build a Sentence. That task is taken inside the timed exam. A full Writing section costs 3 credits. The indicative 1.0–6.0 Writing figure on a full section is a map of the three task results, rounded to the nearest 0.5. It is orientation. It is not the official Writing score.
The writing checker is the paste path. The methodology page shows the Writing calculator and says, plainly, that the calculator is a Writing tool. It does not score Reading or Listening.
Speaking
Speaking is about 8 minutes and 11 items: seven Listen and Repeat sentences and four Take an Interview questions. You hear the sentence or the question and speak once. There is no preparation minute of the kind the older tasks allowed. Repeat items are judged for accuracy, intelligibility, and fluency. Interview items add language use and organization. Each item can show a 0–5 practice score. A full section maps the raw total onto an indicative 1.0–6.0 Speaking figure.
Listen and Repeat is 1 credit and is the Speaking task a free account can start. The interview is also 1 credit. The 11-item section is 3 credits. Audio is not retained. The report uses the transcript and timing evidence. Speaking practice is the hub. A sample of seven sentences, with illustrative marks that are not a real learner score, is in the Listen and Repeat sample.

Open Reading practiceTwo kinds of practice scores
Reading and Listening practice scores are counts. A blank, a choice, or a listening question is right or wrong. The indicative band summarizes the count. There is no criterion called “organization” on a notice, and there is no partial credit for a nearly spelled word.
Writing and Speaking practice scores on the constructed tasks are criteria. An email can be strong on tone and weak on a required point. A repeat can be clear and still drop a room number. Those 0–5 bars are why a Writing report looks unlike a Reading report. Averaging a Reading 4.5 with an email’s 3 for Language Facility is not a TOEFL total. The scales answer different questions.
Official 1–6 section scores are ETS’s. Nothing on this site replaces them. How Reading is scored and how Listening is scored say the same thing for the receptive sections. The Writing and Speaking methodology page says it for the productive ones. If you remember one limit, remember that one: practice bands are for choosing the next drill.
What to practice first
Pick the section you understand least, not all four in an afternoon. Two free credits will show you two reports. A sensible pair is one receptive task and one productive task: Complete the Words plus Listen and Repeat, or a pasted email plus Choose a Response. A full section of anything waits until a solo report has a miss you can name.
If you already know the miss, use the section hub instead of this overview. This page will still be here when you need the order of the test. It will not grade an item. How to spend the two free credits is in which TOEFL section to practice first. What the 1.0–6.0 figure can and cannot mean is in practice score versus official score.
Try this yourself
Write the four section names in order from memory, then add one task name under each. Check the table above. The task you could not name is the first credit. Do not start a 3-credit section to discover the task list. The list is on this page.
Reading practice, Listening practice, Speaking practice, and the writing checker are the four doors. Open one.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the 2026 TOEFL?
Public materials describe a test under two hours. The approximate section times are about 30, 29, 23, and 8 minutes for Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. Instructions sit outside those base times.
Which sections are adaptive?
Reading and Listening. Module 2 is easier or harder based on Module 1. Writing and Speaking are not described as multistage adaptive in the public overview.
Is the score still out of 120?
The 2026 scale highlighted in public ETS updates is 1–6 in half-point steps, aligned with CEFR bands. Do not plan prep around a 0–30 section if your test date uses the updated scale. Practice bands on this site use 1.0–6.0 as an indicative figure only.
Can I practice all four sections for free?
You can start tasks with the 2 free credits, shared across sections. A full section of any skill costs 3 credits, so the free account sees solo tasks, not four complete sections.
