How we score TOEFL Writing and Speaking
Practice reports teach what raises official task scores. Writing and Speaking use task-specific criteria, spend credits the same way the product does, and clearly label estimates — not official ETS scores.
Machine items
Build a Sentence is exact chunk order: 1 or 0 per item, ten items, no partial credit.
Constructed responses
Email, Discussion, Listen and Repeat, and Interview use 0–5 practice scores with dual-model checks and Score-0 gates.

How Writing practice scores work
Write an Email is scored on Purposeful Communication, Social Conventions and Tone, and Language Facility. Academic Discussion is scored on Contribution and Elaboration, Idea Development and Organization, and Language Facility. Both use the public 0–5 descriptors.
Build a Sentence is not a rubric score. Each of the ten items is right or wrong by chunk order. Missing one required email bullet, or only agreeing in a discussion post, is a criterion problem — not a “band” problem.
A pasted email or discussion uses 1 credit when you submit. The full timed Writing section uses 3 credits and is meant for paid practice, not the free trial.
How Speaking practice scores work
Listen and Repeat items combine Repeat Accuracy, Intelligibility, and Fluency. Take an Interview items add Language Use and Organization. Each item receives a 0–5 practice score, then the earned raw total maps to an indicative 1.0–6.0 Speaking figure.
Listen and Repeat is the conversion task: seven sentences, about two minutes, 1 credit used when the exam starts. The full 11-item section costs 3 credits and is blocked on the free trial.
Audio is not retained. The report uses the transcript and timing evidence (WPM, pauses, fillers, time to first word) to explain what to change.
What the calculator is for
The widget above maps three Writing task scores onto a 1.0–6.0 orientation figure. Change any input and the exact mean updates immediately; the band only moves on 0.5 steps, which is why 7 / 3.5 / 3.5 and 8 / 3.5 / 3.5 can both round to 4.5.
That rounding is not a score. Paste a real email or discussion if you want criterion evidence. Record Listen and Repeat if you want speaking evidence.
