How TOEFL Reading is scored in 2026 is easier to practice than the old 0–30 section, and easier to misunderstand. Official scores use a 1–6 scale in half-point steps. On this site, every Reading blank or question is marked right or wrong, and the indicative 1.0–6.0 figure is mapped from how many you got right. That figure orients practice. It is not an ETS result and it is not a prediction.
In this guide
Right or wrong, then a band
Reading items do not use the 0–5 writing criteria. A Complete the Words blank is correct only when the letters match, ignoring case. A daily-life or passage question is correct only when you chose the keyed option. There is no partial credit for a nearly spelled word or for a distractor that mentions a real detail from the text.
The practice band is a summary of that count. More correct items map higher on the 1.0–6.0 scale, in half steps, the same way the product rounds other section figures. The exact cut points are not an official concordance table, and they can move as a set gets longer or shorter. A 4.5 on a ten-blank Complete the Words task is not the same evidence as a 4.5 on a two-module section. Compare counts inside one task type before you compare bands across task types.
The public test also reports Reading on 1–6. ETS does not publish a “number correct equals this band” chart you can memorize, and this product does not pretend to have one. If a tutor gives you an official-looking conversion from a ten-item drill, treat it as a guess.

Start Complete the Words freeWhat each task contributes
Complete the Words contributes one point per blank. Ten blanks means ten chances, and a wrong ending is a full miss even if the first letters were given on the screen. The report shows the word you built and the word that was keyed. Grammar that “could” work is not enough. “Reservat” plus “ion” may be a real word and still be wrong if the sentence needed “reserved.”
Read in Daily Life contributes one point per question. A short email can carry two or more questions. Missing the deadline and getting the sender right is still a miss on the deadline item. The rationale points at the sentence that decides the key. If your option repeats a word from a different sentence, the report is telling you the match was lexical, not logical.
Read an Academic Passage contributes one point per question: main idea, vocabulary in context, inference, or purpose. An inference item is still right or wrong. “Inference” does not mean a partial score for a reasonable story. The supporting sentence is either the one the key uses or it is not.
| Miss | Counted as | Next drill |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong letters, right word class | 0 on that blank | Endings and word family |
| Right detail, wrong question | 0 on that question | Underline the asked fact |
| True sentence, wrong job | 0 on a purpose item | Ask what the sentence is doing |
The Reading section guide lists the three tasks. Scoring does not average them with Speaking or Writing. A Reading band does not move because an email draft improved.
Why Module 2 does not rewrite Module 1
Module 2 is easier or harder because of Module 1. That routing chooses content. It does not erase the items you already missed, and it does not award extra points for “reaching” the harder set. In the practice report the two modules stay separate so you can see whether the miss type changed.
If Module 1 daily-life items were clean and Module 2 academic items were not, the harder set exposed a passage problem. If both modules miss the same blank pattern, routing is not the story. Do not book another full section to “get the hard module.” Repair the repeated miss on a 1-credit task. The full section costs 3 credits when it starts and is the check after that repair.
How to read a practice report
Read the count before the band. “7 of 10” is a decision. “4.5” is a label on that decision. Then read only the misses. For each one, write the rule in one line: “second half of the verb, not a noun,” or “the notice moved the room, not the time.” The next attempt tests that line. It does not test a new strategy you found in a comment section.
Group the misses by task before you group them by topic. Three wrong blanks about biology and one wrong menu question are a Complete the Words problem. One wrong blank and three wrong menu questions are a daily-life problem. Topic labels hide that.
When the report shows a rationale, use it as the location of the evidence, not as a paragraph to memorize. The next text will not repeat the sentence. It will repeat the job: find the change, find the claim, finish the word the sentence already started.
Open TOEFL Reading practice after you can say which task owns the misses. Starting from the hub keeps the 1-credit task and the 3-credit section from getting mixed up.

Start Complete the Words freeWhat not to do with the number
Do not average a Reading practice band with a Writing 0–5 task score. They are different scales and different evidence. Do not tell an admissions story from a ten-item drill. Do not retake the same item set until the band ticks up by guessing the blanks you now remember. A second try on remembered letters is memory, not reading.
Do not ignore a flat band. The displayed figure rounds to the nearest 0.5. Two attempts can share a band while the correct count moved by one item. Look at the count. The Writing calculator on the methodology page has the same rounding habit for a different formula. Reading does not use that three-task Writing mean.
Listening is scored the same way: right or wrong items, then an indicative band. The tasks differ. The refusal to treat the band as official does not.
A count you can compare next week
Keep a three-row note for the week: date, task, fraction. Do not add the band to the note. At the end of the week, look only at rows with the same task. Ten blanks compared with ten blanks tells you whether endings improved. Ten blanks compared with a two-module section does not. If the same task’s fraction is flat, the rule on the third line of your review was too vague. Replace it before you buy another credit.
When a fraction jumps because you recognized a paragraph from yesterday, throw the row out. Memory is not the skill. The next set has to be new text. That is also why the full section is a poor daily habit. It is long enough to feel serious and familiar enough, if you repeat it, to reward remembering Module 1. One new solo task is the cleaner comparison.
Try this yourself
Take one Complete the Words set. Before you open the band, write your own fraction, such as “8 of 10,” and one rule for each miss. Then open the report and see whether the band changed your decision. If it did not, you are using the score correctly.
Start Complete the Words for that single count. Use the full Reading section only when you want both modules in one report.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 1.0–6.0 Reading number my official score?
No. Official TOEFL Reading is reported on a 1–6 scale, and ETS scores that section with its own process. The number in a practice report is an indicative map of the items you answered here.
Do Reading items have partial credit?
No. A blank or a question is right or wrong. A word that is one letter off scores 0. A choice that mentions a real detail but answers a different question scores 0.
Does a harder Module 2 raise the band by itself?
No. Module 2 adds items at a different level. The band still comes from how many items were correct. Routing is not a bonus.
Should I practice all three tasks before I look at a band?
Look at a count after every task. A band on a mixed section is useful only after you know which task produced the misses. One credit is enough for that first count.
Next steps
Sit one task, write the fraction, then follow the 14-day Reading plan from the weakest task. The section layout is in TOEFL Reading section 2026.
