Which TOEFL Section to Practice First

Practice the TOEFL section whose task you cannot yet name. Two free credits should buy two reports, not a second full section before you know the miss.

Practice feedback aligned to public TOEFL Writing 0–5 descriptors · how we grade · Not an official ETS score

Which TOEFL section to practice first is the section whose task you cannot name. The test itself has a fixed order: Reading, Listening, Writing, then Speaking. Study does not have to copy that order. ETS has said as much in its own planner: the chapters can start with the skill you are least comfortable with. On this site you have 2 free credits, shared across all four sections. Each solo task costs 1 credit. A full section costs 3. The first two credits should buy two reports you can describe, not a 3-credit section you cannot finish on the free pair.

Name the task before you pick the section

Write four lines from memory.

  • Reading: Complete the Words, a daily-life text, an academic passage.
  • Listening: Choose a Response, a conversation, an announcement, an academic talk.
  • Writing: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Academic Discussion.
  • Speaking: Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview.

The blank line is the first credit. If you wrote “Reading is passages” and could not say Complete the Words, the first credit is Reading, specifically Complete the Words. If you wrote “Listening is lectures” and could not say Choose a Response, the first credit is Choose a Response. A section you can describe in one old-format sentence is the section you do not know yet.

The format overview in the 2026 exam guide is where those task lists are taught. This page assumes you will look when a line is blank. It does not repeat the timing table.

People often start with the section they enjoy, because a clean report feels like progress. A clean report on a task you already understand does not tell you what the test will ask in the section you avoided. The uncomfortable line is the one that changes the week.

What the two free credits can be

A sensible pair is one receptive task and one productive task. You learn whether your miss is a wrong item or a weak criterion, which are different repairs.

First credit Second credit What the pair shows
Complete the Words Listen and Repeat A right-or-wrong blank, then a 0–5 repeat
Choose a Response A pasted email A reply you echoed, then a 0–5 email criterion
Listen and Repeat Complete the Words Delivery evidence, then a letters miss

Reading practice opens on Complete the Words. Listening practice opens on Choose a Response. Speaking practice opens on Listen and Repeat. The writing checker takes a pasted email or discussion. Any two of those are a legal use of the free pair. A full Reading, Listening, Speaking, or Writing section is 3 credits, so it is not a free-pair choice.

Do not spend both credits on the same task unless the first report’s label is still the whole story. One echo on Choose a Response is a reason to repeat that task. One clean Complete the Words set is a reason to leave Reading for the day.

What they should not be

They should not be a second full section of a skill you already took this week. They should not be four different hubs in one afternoon with no sentence written down. And they should not follow the test order just because the test order is Reading first. Test order is about the day you sit the exam. Practice order is about the line you could not fill in.

A diagnostic fantasy is the other trap. Some plans tell you to take a full official test before you study. That can be useful when you already know the task names and you want a timed baseline from the test maker. It is a poor use of your first hour if you cannot yet say what Choose a Response asks. Official materials and this practice site are different products. A practice band here is not an official score. Practice score versus official score draws that line. You do not need an official number to know that you guessed a blank from its letters.

After the first two reports

Read each report until the next action is one task, not “study English.”

  • Reading labels are letters, topic, or outside knowledge. See common Reading mistakes.
  • Listening labels are echo, instruction, number, or example. See common Listening mistakes.
  • Writing labels are a criterion on the email or the discussion, or an exact miss on Build a Sentence.
  • Speaking labels are Fluency, Intelligibility, Repeat Accuracy, Language Use, or Organization.

The third credit, once you have paid or still have one, goes to the label that survived, not to the section you liked. The 14-day plans for Reading and Listening are calendars for that choice. They are not a requirement to finish one skill before you touch another. If Listening is the blank line, start there even if the Reading plan says Day 1.

Stop when you can name the task and the miss. Another section the same night, taken to feel busy, spends a credit the later week needed.

A week that follows the hole, not the brochure

Day one is the blank line and one credit. Day two is the other skill in the pair, so you have seen a right-or-wrong item and a 0–5 task. Day three is the label that is still ugly, even if that means returning to day one’s task. Days four and five are not new sections. They are the same label with a new prompt. A new prompt matters because the repair is the habit, not the memory of one paragraph about a library.

Only after that do you earn a 3-credit section, and only in the skill whose label you can say. A Reading section before you can say “topic” will mix a notice with a passage and hand you a band that points nowhere. A Speaking section before you can say “Repeat Accuracy” will average a sloppy repeat with an interview story. The section is a stress test of a repair, not the way you discover the repair.

If a plan you found online starts with a full diagnostic from a company that is not ETS, treat the number as a stranger’s scale. It can hint at a weak section. It cannot replace the task list on this page. And if the diagnostic uses lectures and independent essays, it is describing a test that changed. The 2026 tasks are the ones in the four lines above. Practice those, in the order of the line you could not finish.

Two free credits are the whole experiment. You do not need a third credit to know which section embarrassed you. You need the sentence. Students who buy a pack on day one are usually buying relief from that sentence. The pack can wait until day three, when the label has either cleared or repeated. Repeated labels are what packs are for. First looks are what the free pair is for.

Try this yourself

Write the four task lists from the first section on paper. Circle the list with a hole in it. Spend one credit on that section’s free task: Complete the Words, Choose a Response, Listen and Repeat, or a pasted email. Write one sentence about the miss before you touch the second credit. Start the first credit from Complete the Words, Choose a Response, Listen and Repeat, or the writing checker. Then pick the second credit from a different skill so you see both a right-or-wrong item and a 0–5 task, unless the first label is still unfixed.

Frequently asked questions

Should I follow the test order when I study?

No. The exam runs Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking. Practice starts with the section whose tasks you cannot name. The order of the test still matters on test day, which is why the format guide exists. It does not have to be Monday’s plan.

Can I start with a full section?

Not on the free pair. A full section is 3 credits. Start with a 1-credit task, name the miss, and take the section when you want the two-module timing.

Do the free credits expire by skill?

No. The 2 credits are shared. A Reading attempt and a Speaking attempt draw from the same pair. Unused credit on one skill is not a separate balance.
