TOEFL Reading 2026 vs the old format is a change of tasks, not a shorter version of the same two passages. Until the January 2026 update, Reading practice usually meant two academic passages of about 700 words, about 20 questions, and about 35 minutes. The current public section is about 50 items in about 30 minutes, and the time and the item count can vary as the test adapts. The tasks are Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage. A book that still times a 700-word passage is describing the previous exam.

TOEFL Reading 2026 vs the old format, side by side

Reading before 2026 Reading from January 2026
Texts Two academic passages, about 700 words each Short academic paragraphs, daily-life texts, and a short academic passage
Items About 20 About 50, and the count can vary
Time About 35 minutes About 30 minutes, and the time can vary
Routing Same form for everyone Multistage: Module 2 is easier or harder after Module 1
Extra jobs Insert-text and prose summary were part of the long-passage set Letter completion and practical texts are now their own tasks

More items in less time means each item is smaller. It does not mean the section is casual. Complete the Words gives you an intact first sentence and then missing word endings, typically ten in a paragraph of about 70–100 words, with no word bank. Daily-life items use an email, a notice, or a similar short text. The academic passage on this product is about 200 words, with questions on the main idea, a word in context, an inference, and purpose. The section guide is the map. This page is only the comparison.

The score scale changed with the test. Official reports use 1–6 section scores in half steps, plus an overall average. During a transition, a comparable 0–120 total may also appear. A practice report here maps a right/wrong count onto an indicative 1.0–6.0 figure. That figure is not an official ETS score, and a 25/30 from an old book is not a point on the new scale.

What you should retire

Retire the 18-minute passage block. The skill it trained was holding a long argument, tracking paragraph numbers, and answering insert-text items that pointed at a square in the passage. The current academic task still wants the claim and the job of an example. It does not want a ten-paragraph map.

Retire prose-summary drills as your main Reading workout. Choosing three sentences that represent a 700-word text is a different selection problem from typing a missing ending or finding the deadline in an email.

Retire the idea that every wrong answer is “vocabulary.” A Complete the Words miss can be an ending. A daily-life miss can be a true campus habit the email rejected. A passage miss can be a true sentence that answers a different question. Common Reading mistakes separates those three. Old books often folded them into one “reading comprehension” label.

Retire any plan that says finish the old book first. A week of current tasks will tell you more than another month of insert-text sets. If the test date is close, the sunk cost of the old notes is the expensive part.

What still transfers

The sentence-level habits transfer if you strip the template off.

A word in context is still a word in that sentence, not a dictionary tour. Old vocabulary items and the current vocabulary item share that rule. They do not share the Complete the Words mechanic, where the letters themselves are the answer.

An inference is still a conclusion the text forces, not a policy you prefer. Old inference items and the current ones agree on that. The current text is shorter, so the limit is often in the next sentence rather than three paragraphs later.

Ignoring outside knowledge still matters. A biology fact that is not in the passage scored 0 before, and it scores 0 now. Daily-life texts make the same demand in a practical voice: the usual rule of a gym is not evidence if the notice says otherwise.

What does not transfer is pacing math built for two passages. Splitting 35 minutes into two 17-minute readings will not place you inside a module of short items. Reading timing is the clock to use instead.

How to check a book in one minute

Open the contents page. If the Reading chapter says “Passage 1 / Passage 2” and the timer starts at 35:00, the chapter is the old section. If it names Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage, it is aimed at the current section. A book can contain both. Use the current chapter for scored practice and the old chapter only as a generic way to read carefully, not as a model of the form.

Then check the score. If the answer key converts everything to a number out of 30 and never mentions 1–6, do not track that number against a 2026 practice band. Track a right/wrong count inside one task.

On this product a single task costs 1 credit and the two-module section costs 3. Module clocks in practice are about 9 minutes and then about 10. Those clocks are not the official 30-minute section. They are how you feel the cut between modules. New accounts can start on Complete the Words. That is the right first spend if your old book never asked you to type a word ending.

Keep one old passage only as a way to practice ignoring outside knowledge, and label that session “careful reading,” not “Reading section.” The moment you time it at 18 minutes and score it out of 10, you are back on the retired form. A current academic passage is about 200 words and sits in a mix of other tasks. The stamina you need is many short decisions, including typed letters, not one long hold.

If a classmate’s notes still list insert-text squares, translate each square into a purpose question: why is this sentence here? That translation saves the thinking and drops the mechanic the 2026 task is not asking you to drag. Do the translation once, on paper, then close the old set. Repeating the square itself will not show up on the report you are about to earn. One current task, scored and reviewed by item, is the replacement for that square. Do not average it with an old passage score. The two numbers are not on the same scale, and mixing them hides which task you actually missed.

Try this yourself

Take one old Reading set you still own and write down its timer and its task names. If the timer is 35 minutes and the tasks are long passages, close it for section practice. Then complete one current task and confirm the report’s task name is Complete the Words, a daily-life text, or an academic passage.

Start Reading practice on Complete the Words if you have not typed endings under a clock. Use Read an Academic Passage if the old book’s only leftover value was main-idea work and you want that job on a short text.

Frequently asked questions

Did the long passages disappear?

The two-passage, about-700-word Reading section is not the 2026 structure. You still read an academic passage. It is short, and it sits beside letter-completion and daily-life texts. About 50 items in about 30 minutes is the public shape, and both numbers can vary because the section adapts.

Is Module 2 something I choose?

No. Performance on Module 1 routes an easier or harder Module 2. You do not get to return to Module 1 after the section moves. Routing is not a bonus you can force.

Can I convert an old 24/30 into a new band?

No conversion is claimed here. The scales are different, and a practice 1.0–6.0 figure is not an official score. Compare counts inside one current task.
