Free vs Paid TOEFL Speaking Practice

Free TOEFL Speaking practice buys one real report. Paid credits buy repetition and the full 11-item section. Paying does not change how scoring works.

Practice feedback aligned to public-style TOEFL Speaking criteria · how we grade · Not an official ETS score

Free vs paid TOEFL Speaking practice is a difference in how many attempts you can start, not a difference in the scoring rules. A new account has 2 evaluation credits. Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview each cost 1 credit when the exam starts. A full 11-item Speaking section costs 3 credits and is not covered by the free pair. The report on a free attempt uses the same criteria as a paid attempt. Paying does not make the model stricter, and it does not turn a practice band into an official ETS score.

What the free credits actually buy

Two credits can be two Listen and Repeat sets, or one repeat set and one interview, or a Speaking task plus a task in another skill. They cannot be a 3-credit full section. The free path is built so you can see a report before you decide the product is worth repeating.

A Listen and Repeat report shows Repeat Accuracy, Intelligibility, and Fluency, plus timing evidence such as pauses and time to first word. An interview report adds Language Use and Organization. Audio is not kept. The report is the transcript and the timing, not a file you can download and re-listen to later. That limit is the same on a paid attempt. If you need a recording to replay, this product is the wrong tool for that job, free or paid.

The Listen and Repeat sample shows the shape of a seven-sentence set with illustrative marks. Those marks are not what your free credit will print. Your credit prints your attempt. Use the sample to learn the criteria, then spend the credit on sentences you have not memorized.

What paid credits add

Paid credits, whether from a plan or a pack, add attempts. That matters because one set cannot show a pattern. A single muddy sentence might be a bad start. The same blur on sentences 4, 5, and 6 is intelligibility. You only see the pattern if you can record again after you have named the bar.

Paid credits also unlock the full section: seven Listen and Repeat sentences plus four interview questions, about eight minutes of speaking work, 3 credits at the start. The full section is how you find out whether a clean repeat set falls apart once the interview starts, or the reverse. It is a poor first purchase. It is a reasonable second week, after mistakes by criterion has told you which bar to watch while both tasks run.

The Writing side of the same wallet works the same way: a pasted draft is 1 credit on submit, and a full Writing section is 3. The comparison article for that checker is free vs paid TOEFL writing. Speaking does not get a separate, secret scale when the invoice is paid.

What does not change when you pay

The criteria do not change. A paid Listen and Repeat item is still accuracy, intelligibility, and fluency. A paid interview is still those delivery bars plus language and organization. The indicative 1.0–6.0 figure is still a practice map. ETS still produces the only official Speaking score.

The one-take rule does not change. Paying does not add a preparation timer the 2026 task does not have. It does not let you re-record the item inside the exam and keep the prettier take. If a marketing page implies that a paid tier “matches official raters,” that claim is not one this product makes. How Speaking is scored is the limit. Read it before you buy a stack of credits to chase a number.

Human feedback is a different product. A person can ask you a follow-up the recorded interview will not ask. A person is also slower and usually costs more per attempt. This comparison does not include a study of whose score is closer to an ETS rater. We have not run that study. AI tutor vs human tutor is the longer version of that honesty. Use a person when you need a conversation about your answer. Use this task when you need a timed first take and a criterion split.

A honest split of jobs

Job Free credits Paid credits
See one real report Yes, 1 credit Yes
Compare two attempts of the same task Only if you spend both free credits there Yes
Full 11-item section No, it costs 3 Yes
Stricter scoring No No
Official score No No
Kept audio file No No

If your job is “find out whether I start too late,” one free Listen and Repeat set is enough. If your job is “repair the late start across a week,” you will run out of free credits on purpose. That is the point of the limit. The 14-day Speaking plan assumes you can repeat. Do not start that plan on the last free credit and call the plan broken when Day 2 has nothing to spend.

When paying is a waste

Pay is a waste if you have not read a report. Another credit on top of an unread miss list buys the same miss. Pay is a waste if you want a guaranteed band. Nobody selling practice credits can sell the official result. Pay is a waste if you need the audio file afterward. This product does not keep it.

Pay is not a waste if the free report named a bar and you want three more sets that test only that bar. That is repetition, which is the thing free credits ration. Start the first set from Listen and Repeat or Speaking practice. Read the Speaking checker if you want the report described before you record. Spend the second free credit only after the first report has a lowest bar.

Try this yourself

Use one free credit on Listen and Repeat. Write the lowest criterion in a sentence. Decide, in writing, whether the next step is the second free credit on the same task or a paid block for the week. If you cannot name the criterion, do not pay yet. The invoice will not name it for you.

Start Listen and Repeat. The free credit is the whole experiment.

Frequently asked questions

Is free Speaking feedback a demo score?

No. The free attempt is scored with the same practice criteria as a paid attempt. The limit is the number of starts, and the fact that the 3-credit section does not fit in two free credits.

Does paid practice include the interview and the repeats?

A paid credit can start either task for 1 credit, or the full section for 3. You choose. Paying does not force you into the long section.

Will paid attempts match my ETS Speaking score?

Do not expect that. The report is practice evidence. ETS scores the official test. A closer match is not something we have measured, and it is not a benefit of the paid tier.

Can I use a free credit on Writing instead?

Yes. The two credits are shared across skills. A Speaking comparison does not lock them. If your test problem is an email, the writing checker is the better first spend. This page assumes you already know Speaking is the section you want to see.

Next steps

Spend one credit, name one bar, then decide. Pricing is the place to buy more attempts after that sentence exists, not before. If the sentence is “I was nervous,” it is not a bar. Nervousness does not tell you whether to drill a beep start or a dropped negative. Listen to the report until the sentence names Repeat Accuracy, Intelligibility, Fluency, Language Use, or Organization. Then the second credit, free or paid, has a target. A stack of credits aimed at nervousness will come back with the same paragraph and a smaller balance. The product can show the bar. It cannot care about the attempt for you. That part stays on the page where you wrote the sentence, which is also why an unread report is not a trial of the scoring. It is a trial of whether you looked.
